Why opt for a DICOM-calibrated display?
As a dentist, you need to know for sure that the images you see are accurate representations of your patient’s area of interest. In addition, the quality of your images must be consistent and repeatable, not only over time, but on every display monitor you are using. To ensure that your dental images are shown consistently every single time, your display system needs to be calibrated on a regular basis. LCD monitors need initial calibration and then - due to the effects of aging - some form of regular automated or manual calibration later on to ensure that they continue to comply with the required medical quality standards.
The DICOM curve
The way human eyes respond to varying light levels is not linear. At low luminance levels, we can notice small changes in luminance. At higher luminance, the difference needs to be much greater before we perceive it.

The DICOM curve was developed by the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) Task Group 18 to ensure that medical displays are standardized to the way human eyes perceive luminance. On the DICOM curve, an image is represented on a scale in incremental values from zero to 1,023. Each grayscale increment corresponds to an increment in luminance that can just be perceived by the human eye.
Your benefits
DICOM calibration ensures that a given grayscale level will appear the same from one display to the next. It's the standard for viewing grayscale medical images and it is designed to reproduce approximately the same experience as we would get when viewing film.
DICOM 'out-of-the-box'
MDRC displays come ‘out-of-the-box’ with a preset DICOM-curve. This ensures high-precision grayscale renditions, which turns the display into an ideal solution for dental X-ray imaging.
